5 Tips to Get Your Workout Mojo Back
Let’s be honest, there are some days when we just don’t feel like working out. Sometimes this can be our body crying out for much needed rest, in which case we would do well to listen up (body knows best!). Then there are other times – perhaps we’re feeling bored, uninspired, anxious or down – but for whatever reason we’re just not feelin’ it.
We lose our workout motivation or mojo, as I like to call it. While a short exercise hiatus may be therapeutic, when that funk lasts for a week, or a month (or more!) it might be time to rethink your workout and seek some fresh inspiration.
Need some fresh workout motivation? Below are 5 tips that I have personally found useful for regaining my workout mojo!:
#1 Find Your Jam!
Never doubt the power of a good beat – sometimes music is just the thing you need to psych yourself up for a workout. Studies suggest that motivational music during exercise may increase performance and happiness! (1)
#2 Shorten Your Workout
How long do you spend working out? Your workout should never be so time consuming that you dread it. Contrary to popular belief, a good workout doesn’t have to take upwards of an hour. Or even half an hour. It could be as short as 10 minutes! Numerous recent studies have exposed several benefits of short, intense training sessions. So maybe instead of that 5km run, try doing a few sprints!
#3 Change Your Routine and Try a New Form of Exercise
Too often we cling to routine, for a number of reasons. If you’re getting bored of your regular routine don’t be afraid to change it up. While we love HIIT and strength training, the best workout it the workout that you do! Any exercise is better than none at the end of the day. So try something new: tabata, cross fit, yoga, pilates, skipping, running – the list goes on!
Recently I’ve been making space in my routine for a weekly session of tabata – it’s refreshing, it’s fun, and a nice change of pace!
#4 Challenge Yourself with a New Move
Need a challenge? Learn something new! If you’ve never been able to do a pushup or pull-up, give it a go! Maybe you want to be able to do a handstand, or some bendy yoga move. There is nothing like the satisfaction of seeing yourself progress and being able to do something you once couldn’t. Added bonus: you get automatic bragging rights around your friends! ?
#5 Find Inspiration and Fake It Till You Make It
Ever heard of somebody feigning confidence by pretending they are Beyoncé on entering a crowded room? Well this is the same principle, applied to your workout! Take inspiration from somebody who is healthy, strong and determined. Maybe it’s a close friend, an athlete, a celebrity or a kick-ass TV character – it really doesn’t matter! It might sound corny, but by embodying the character of somebody else you might just find the energy and motivation that you need. So next time you’re feeling a bit uninspired during your reps, think ‘what would ____ do?’ – it might just give you the boost to keep going!
